Overview of Pain Assessment and Intervention From a Psychophysiological Perspective
This overview (PEP042) 4 credit hour CE course is intended to provide an overview of psychophysiology as a powerful tool for assessment and of biofeedback along with kindred interventions such as relaxation training and CBT for many psychophysiologically based problems resulting in pain as the primary issue. Most of the techniques are within the scopes of practice of virtually all physiotherapists, psychologists, and psychotherapists.

The content of this 4 CE course is contained in three lectures which last about four hours in total. At the end of the class, you will need to take a brief exam and send in an evaluation of the course. The APA requires us to report each student’s profession so you will be asked to supply that information as well. You will receive a course completion certificate after we receive your exam and course evaluation.

· Describe the relationship between psychophysiology and biofeedback.
· Give at least two examples of unique information provided by psychophysiological assessments not attainable in other ways.
· Summarize the psychophysiological processes underlying at least 3 pain based conditions commonly treated with biofeedback
· Describe how typical biofeedback sessions are conducted including the coaching relationship.
· Summarize how biofeedback devices are used to apply at least two specific pain based interventions.
· List 4 lines of evidence showing that specific biofeedback based interventions are efficacious for pain related problems.
